Live Review – Project Locrea - Humans Beyond Borders Series

How would you like to visit China, Bulgaria, Ethiopia and Argentina, sampling the authentic music, food and culture of each continent. Sounds like fun. It also sounds like a lot of work and it will cost you an arm and a leg….unless you do it without leaving the DC area, with multicultural band, and Antidote recording artists, Project Locrea as your guides.

The band kicked of their series of six concerts in Arlington, on the theme of HUMANS BEYOND BORDERS. A festival of four monthly events, each showcasing a region from which band-members originated. It’s an ambitious concept, made even more fascinating by their efforts to reflect each culture, not just in music but with food, and highlighting unique cultural features. For tonight’s China themed show there were bao buns, acupuncture, and a display of ethnic instruments, in addition to the stunning music led by Chinese yangquin (hammered dulcimer) player Chao Tian. Expanding on their repertoire Project Locrea also included a special guest into the show, Duke Tang on erhu, a bowed, two string traditional version of the violin, which weaved ethereal melodies on ensemble pieces, and in duets with Chao.

Project Locrea win friends at each performance with their generous, spirited, multi-cultural music, delivered with virtuosity and heart. Their reputation grows throughout the region and beyond, based on their recent touring schedule and past forays overseas into China. Antidote records is truly proud to have presented their debut album and to be part of the Locrea family. Come join us at the forthcoming shows featuring the music and cultures of Ethiopia, Latin America, Jewish music, Locrea’s original music, and next month, Bulgaria.
